Negros Occidental – originally called “Buglas”, an old native word that is thought to mean “cut off”.

It is believed that Negros was once part of a greater mass of land but was cut off either by what geologists call a continental drift or by the rising waters during the so-called glacial age. Among its earliest inhabitants were dark-skinned natives belonging to the Negrito ethnic group with their unique culture.

Aklan – the youngest of the four provinces of Panay Island, which is one of the oldest if not the oldest province in the country. Established in 1956 as a province of the Republic of the Philippines, Aklan (including what is now Capiz) was organized as Minuro it Akean settlers from Borneo in 1213.

These are some of the historical features of the two provinces in Western Visayas.

Have you ever heard of histoventure?

Well, my Negros Occidental experience urged me to coin such term.

Can you blame me last summer when I was amused and amazed by the grandeur that was Negros      Occidental?

There’s more to it than just being the Sugar Capital of the Philippines.

Or the home of Maskara Festival.

Or the Manokan Country.

Or the Province of Haciendas.

Or the Bastion of Arhitectural Design.

Or the Seat of Culture, Arts, and Eco-Tourism.

CampBlog 2010 — offered by ischools Project of the Commission on Information and Communications Technology –- made my trip to Negros Occidental a dream come true.

The said Camp was conducted from May 31 to June 9, 2010 at Nature’s Village Resort in Talisay City, Negros Occidental participated in by different representatives of ischools recipient schools from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

One of the objectives of the Camp is to develop localized educational content, this time about Filipino arts and culture, using blogging as a platform.

In just ten days, here’s my histoventure:

THE BALAY NEGRENSE: THE HOME OF HERITAGE -The 12-bedroom structure designed and built by Don Victor Gaston around 1898 for his family is one among of the largest colonial houses in the city of Silay. The Balay Negrense is full of artifacts that details the memorabilia of the Gaston’s Family like their bedrooms, filipiniana dresses, toy collections, and antique furnitures.

MANUEL SEVERINO HOFILEÑA ANCESTRAL HOUSE: THE HOUSE OF PAINTINGS – The house is a place of masterpieces of artworks of Filipino masters like Juan Luna, Fernando Amorsolo and Vicente Manansala and a sketch by Philippine national hero Dr. Jose P. Rizal.

The first ancestral house in Silay to welcome tourists, it houses Ramon Hofileñas art collections and historical memorabilia.

VICTORIA’S CHURCH OF ST. JOSEPH THE WORKER:THE CHURCH OF CONTROVERSY – this cite is remarkable of its controversial painting “The Angry Christ”.

THE MANAPLA: Chapel of the Cartwheels -this is also called as an “Indigenous Chapel” found in Victorias City made of cartwheels and woods that is architecturally and extraordinarily designed. Really amazing!

THE RUINS: THE ELEGANT RUINED MANSION – elegant, world class architectural design and historical mansion of Don Mariano Ledesma Lacson found in Talisay City. The mansion’s final touches to the walls were made with eggwhites mixed with cement to give that marlbe-like finish.

As cited by some writers Abe Florendo-Philippine Inquirer – “Then at the end of the road, like a sudden apparition, something out of a half forgotten dream looms. The ruin. It takes your breath away. And it takes a long time to recover.”

“Like a lady wooed by her man, the Ruins play with your emotions especially at sunset with its orange pinks and purples hues. He charms, tickles and romances you. But at sundown, the Ruins take a different persona. With blue and golden sights emanating from nooks and crannies, it is now a lady, teasing, flirting, a temptress confident of her beauty as well as her majesty.”

“They say that you have not seen Macau if you do not visit the Ruins of the St. Paul’s Cathedral. With the popularity of the Ruins, it is safe to say you haven’t see Talisay if you have not been romanced by the Ruins.”
